A Guide to Crystal Energy for Work + Life {feat. Sean LIV from Flourish Liv Well Spa}

From dazzling gems on display in yoga studios to rose quartz face rollers and jagged jewel toppings on soy candles, crystals have hit the mainstream.

What’s with the hype?  They’re said to carry good vibrations, allow connection to the chakras, and have the ability to shift your emotional or mental state. And who doesn’t love to be surrounded by good vibes?

But, if you’re new to crystal use or just exploring how to bring these spiritual sidekicks into your life, where to start?  What should you know about these hypnotic looking, come-in-every-shade-of-the-rainbow gems?

To guide us on our way, we sit down with transformational coach, wellness mentor, and crystal devotee, Sean Liv

CRYSTAL ENERGY: A QUICK INTRO //

The idea of crystal energy is certainly not a new one.  With deep roots in ancient wellbeing practices, these natural gems have long been considered to hold powerful healing properties; each type said to radiate varying vibrational frequencies.  These vibrations work to promote the flow of good energy around your body, while also ridding it of negative energy - the result benefitting your overall emotional and physical being.

And like all of us, each type of crystal is thought to have its own unique personality and qualities. Think of it as tapping into an energy toolkit of diverse and dynamic crystal characters {more on this later…}.

As well as trusting her extensive crystal collection in all aspects of her day-to-day {even carrying a pocket-sized gem in her bra; more on this later too...}, one of the ways Sean works with crystal energy is in her role as Director of Flourish Liv Well Spa, based at Azuridge Estate Hotel, Priddis {we had the fortune of connecting with Sean through Paper Road client work for Flourish}.

Unlike your typical spa experience, Flourish Liv Well Spa is 100% centred around the healing power of crystals.  From gem-infused massage treatments, Chakra flow sessions, gem-inspired yoga practice, to meditation in the crystal-adorned spa lounge, time at Flourish is all about gem-inspired reinvigoration, vitality, and transformation.  Sean is the visionary, program curator, and leader of all things LIV Well at Flourish, so who better to show us a thing or two about using gems in work and life.

FEELING IN AN ENERGY FUNK?  YOU’RE NOT ALONE //

Feeling a little off your game?  Sean puts that down to a flat, pandemic-fatigued collective energy.

“You know, some people actually excelled during COVID, starting creative ventures or new businesses, getting fit, reading more. But the more common story, unfortunately, is that we’ve suffered energetically.  We’ve felt isolated, or frustrated, or have been dealing with anxiety over the unknown.”

Sean explains that energy changes are natural, and very much part of being human – but it’s how we’re able to deal with this life shifts and different waves of energy, that’s key.

“We need to accept change and have belief in something larger than us is at work.  Sometimes things are out of our control and just because you hit a barrier, it’s not over; it’s just taking a different form.  That’s been very much the case over the last 18 months as we’ve been dealing with the pandemic the world over.  That’s where crystals come in and can really help.”

Sean says it’s the ideal time for crystal newbies to embrace the healing powers of crystals, set all the intentions, and get those good energy vibrations going.

DIALLING UP THE WORKDAY WELLBEING //

If co-working, Sean explains that the start of generating good workday energy can come from simply working side-by-side and collaborating with good colleagues, or from being in a positive shared space.

“When we successfully contribute to a conversation, or project, and that creative spark is there, we’re inspired, and that feels great, right?”, Sean says.

“The energy lifts. We’re connecting, and creating, and we’re part of something great.  And our friends the crystals just amplify that positive energy in a workspace.

Collaboration takes us to a higher vibration, rather than the lower frequency level of greed and competition – and there’s no crystal out there that can work with that kind of negativity”, she adds with a smile.

But, turning to how crystals can amplify our workday, here are Sean’s recommendations:

A DESKSIDE CRYSTAL SOULMATE //

The first step, Sean explains, is to find a perfect match of crystal that “just feels like you”.

“You want a crystal beside you while you work that amplifies who you are, and your energy”, she explains.

Sean continues: “There are lots of crystals out there, but when you have one that truly fits, the more you’re in tune with your intuition and won’t second guess that idea, or question that decision.  It’s a baseline for great, productive workdays when you have a solid crystal on your desk like that.”

Sean’s picks for a trusty crystal to amplify your personal energy is Amethyst, known for its ability to calm and cool unnecessary emotion and clear mind clutter.  Or the self-love crystal of Rose Quartz “would be another wonderful addition to your desk, as it’s a hero of self-love, positivity, and balance.”

From there, Sean recommends also placing a crystal on your work desk or close to your main area of work that can act as a protector, to repel any negative energy that can bring down your office day.

“We need to carefully guard our workspace so it’s a place of creativity, success and progress.  It’s a sacred space.  My suggestion would be a Black Onyx, a Hematite, or Black Tourmaline.  These are grounding crystals, perfect for banishing negativity.”

A CRYSTAL FOR YOUR MEET SPACE //

To promote creativity and collaboration, Sean says Citrine is “a beautiful crystal”.  But be cautious with that creativity-kickstarting gem, warns Sean, as it’s also very powerful.

“If you use Citrine in a boardroom or meeting setting and you have too many powerful beings present, you might just get some butting heads,” Sean says with a playful laugh.

If this is the case with your work crew, then Aquamarine, with its cool, calming, crystal blue water colour, is a gentle anti-stresser, “which might just nicely balance out that Citrine”, Sean adds.

.. AND FOR OPEN COMMUNICATION //

A Tiger’s Eye, which is a courageous stone.

“Tiger’s Eye connects to the throat chakra, so it’s about communication, speaking your truth, and having courage to express yourself,” Sean explains.

{In the Paper Road Studio, we have a Tiger’s Eye crystal placed by our telephone, and yes you guessed it, this came from a previous recommendation from Sean about the best crystals to place around our workspace}.

Amethyst is known for its ability to calm and cool unnecessary emotion, and clear mind clutter.

 .. FOR FOCUS //

A Rainbow Fluorite.

“If you want to stop the procrastinating and quit the overthinking, then reach for a Rainbow Fluorite,” Sean says.

A mind-clearer, Fluorite helps to ground you and take things one step at a time. A cleansing crystal, this gem is known for its ability to calm and promote focus; a perfect friend for assessing situations and seeing the world with clarity.

But it’s a serious crystal, Sean points out.

“She’s the stern aunt telling you to get it done, while the Rose Quartz is your sweet Grandma,” Sean says with a hearty belly laugh.

.. FOR A NEW PROJECT //

Malachite, that’s the one for transformation.

“If you’re about to embark on a life transformation, bringing together a new team, or changing work location, or let’s say you need a fresh start in your business or want to kickstart a project, then I would definitely go with the Malachite”, Sean advises.

“For all those pieces of ourselves that we have yet to acknowledge but we know are there, the Malachite will do that for us.  It brings everything to the surface; it plants the seed for us. It’s a great intention-setting crystal – and again, this one’s not airy fairy!  It’s not a five pound weight but a fifty-pounder”, Sean says, again with a full laugh.

.. FOR A JOB INTERVIEW //

Sean’s advice: Wear your crystal of choice for any important meeting or work session where you need to shine.

“There are crystal bracelets and necklaces, that you can wear for your power conversations,” Sean says.

“I always put a crystal in my bra for those types of conversations.  Or you can put them in your pocket, or your purse.”

.. FOR AFTER THE WORK DAY //

For the home, Sean recommends selecting crystals that match whatever energy you would like to have in your personal space.  Noting again, that it comes down to personal choice and complementing your individual energy type.

“In my home, I love having the Carnelian crystal and also the Opal, as it’s so calming. And I have Rose Quartz everywhere because it’s just so beautiful and so powerful for self-love, which I think should be the centre of any home. And you can pull in some Amethyst to be by your front door, for protection too.”

And when considering your at-home crystal lineup, pay special attention to the bathroom or bedroom, wherever there are mirrors – or natural sunlight.

“Crystals just radiate where there’s reflection; it amplifies their energetic power.  Think about all those great ideas and waves of inspiration that come to you while brushing your teeth or showering in the morning.  Well imagine harnessing that energy with some well-placed crystals in the bathroom, and you have some seriously great energy!”  Sean says.

“Crystals love to be in the spotlight, so don't hide them in a drawer; let them be seen and see the light!”

PREPPING CRYSTALS FOR YOUR SPACE //

So, once you have your crystals in-hand, is it just a case of placing them down and letting them work their magic?  Not exactly, is Sean’s answer to that.

“I like to set an intention whenever I bring a new crystal into a space, and a full moon night is a perfect time to do that.

“I also like to use the earth to activate the energy.  You can put it outside on the ground - or using water is another way to switch on and dial up the power of your crystal.  Run it under the faucet, or – how Sean prefers to do it – place in a natural stream or a lake, which again is connecting your crystal back to the earth.

This is cleansing and awakening your crystal. It’s not going to be yours until you make it yours.”

ARE WE FRIENDS? A NOTE ON CONFLICTING CRYSTALS //

So, can we assume these pretty little natural healers all play nicely together? Or are there gems that can rub one another up the wrong way?  We already know from Sean that crystals have their own energies, strengths, and characteristics, so can you be in danger of mixing and matching the wrong types of crystals?

The answer from Sean, is actually yes, these energy-carriers can come head-to-head if you’re not careful…

“Crystals of different types can certainly work in harmony together, but because of all those energies and personalities, sometimes, like us, they can have tension between them – or can simply cancel one another out,” Sean says.

Sean especially saw this crystal conflict when cleansing the collection of crystals at Flourish.

“I could just feel they weren’t vibing.  They were lined up on the window ledge to be cleared by the full moon, but something just didn’t feel quite right.  I kid you not, the Amethysts wanted to be together! So, I made that change.”

To prevent crystal conflict, Sean says doing some research on good crystal pairing {or what combos to avoid} is useful, and remembering to set those intentions with new crystals also helps

“Let the Universe know what you’re seeking from your crystals’ energy and avoid any funky energy!”

PASS ON THE GOOD ENERGY //

Sean’s final thought when it comes to bringing crystals into your home or work space?

“Remember, that the relationship you have to your crystal is evolving; what you need in one point of your life, or for a certain time as you work through something, isn’t what you need forever.  Say it’s a divorce or a stressful business period you’re challenged with, the crystal will support you through it, and afterwards, we don’t necessarily need that type of energy anymore.

And the best part of this, according to Sean, is that you can pass on the crystal to someone else who can then benefit from its vibrations.

“Go and gift that good energy!” Sean says, with another beaming, signature Sean Liv smile.
